Climb Away

The ropes course was a lot of fun. We started on the low ropes course and then later in the week moved on to the high ropes course. We completed many obstacles including crossing an imaginary acid river using only a rope to swing between two platforms. On the high ropes course we went on the Burma Bridge which had one wire in the middle and two ropes on the sides to hold onto. We also went on another with “vines” or ropes hanging down that we could use to cross a second wire. The ropes course was a lot of fun and I hope I’ll be able to have an experience like this again.

Orienteering

On Tuesday we started the orienteering portion of OA. We each recieved a compass and learned about how to use it. On Wednesday we put our new skills to the test where we were given bearings in either true north or magnetic north. If our bearings were given in true north we had to add 15 degrees for the declination. Starting in the center of the quad we used our first bearing and made a sighting to take us to either, the door of the Bottom Floor Boys common room, Ms. Duke’s office, the door to the theatre, the top of the hill on the quad, or two areas of the room building. At all these places there was a letter and the order of the bearings made a word. On Thursday we worked more on our orienteering skills; however, this time we worked all over campus, at each different place there was a word and once we found all of ther words the first letter of each spelled a new word.

CPR training

On Thursday we started out first day of CPR training, where we learned what to do if someone is choking. For example how to catch someone that has fainted, how to open up the air passageways, and the correct placement for the Heimlich maneuver. We watched a video and then practiced with our partners and the dummies. We were also given face masks to place over the person’s mouth when giving them oxygen, which makes the procedure a lot healthier. Hopefully we will never have to use these skills but it always helps to be trained in CPR.
